Anyone know much about dogs?

I'm thinking of getting one (yes, I know how much responsibility they are), probably from the shelter, but I'm wondering what breeds I should keep an eye out for for training and protection. Any ideas?

[amagad dogs :D=-<]

Shepherds, rottweilers, dobermans, mastiffs, etc. Pretty much any large dog works as a deterrent.

German shepherds are my personal favourite if we're talking guard dogs, though.

They are. They're very intelligent dogs with a strong protective instinct, and they respond well to training, so that's why cops like them.

My family had one when I was a kid. Never felt safer than when that dog was around.

If you're not getting a puppy from a reputable breeder, I recommend adopting a rescue if you can handle it.

Don't worry too much about breed, then. Rescues have a way of choosing people.

What? Every rescue story I've ever heard involves something special about the animal that spoke to whoever was adopting it, no matter what species it was.

Sometimes, I guess. But you don't always walk out with the sort of animal you went in wanting.

If it's to guard a place, even a small one will do. Any barking is a deterrent.

Though I haven't had a dog in years.

Makes sense.
If you find one, I think you're obligated to post pictures.
